FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most frequent concerns we hear in the clinic.
I am older and worried about whether I am healthy enough – can I still have All-on-4?
Age alone is not a barrier to All-on-4. What matters is your general health, how well your bone has held up, and any medications that affect healing. Many older patients are good candidates. Some are not. An individual consultation, with a review of your medical history, is the only way to know.
What happens if I have a complication after surgery?
Sundial Dental Kempsey is a working clinic, not a fly-in fly-out operation. If you have a concern after surgery, you call the clinic, you come in, and the team that did the work sees you. Local follow-up is one of the main reasons patients choose to be treated near home.
How long is the recovery, realistically?
Most patients are functional within three to five days for office work and longer for physical work. The implants then take three to six months to fully integrate with the bone before the final prosthesis is fitted. You wear a temporary prosthesis during that time.
Can I get a payment plan for All-on-4 at the Kempsey clinic?
Yes. Several third-party payment plan providers are commonly used for dental work in Australia, and our team can walk you through the options at your consultation. Terms vary widely. We do not endorse any single provider, and we encourage you to compare before committing.
How much does All-on-4 cost in Kempsey?
Indicative costs typically range from $23,000 to $35,000 per arch, depending on the prosthesis material and your individual treatment needs. Exact pricing is provided after a consultation and 3D scan. Sundial Dental does not provide pricing without an examination.
What if I have lost most of my teeth already?
All-on-4 is specifically designed for patients who have lost all or most of the teeth in an arch, or whose remaining teeth cannot be saved. If this describes your situation, you may be a candidate. The only way to know is a consultation with imaging.
Is the Kempsey clinic equipped for the 3D imaging All-on-4 needs?
Yes. Modern implant planning requires 3D cone-beam (CBCT) imaging to assess bone volume and plan implant positions safely. This is part of the consultation process at our Kempsey clinic for any patient seriously considering All-on-4.
Is there bulk billing or CDBS available at the Kempsey clinic?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) covers eligible children for general dental care, not adult All-on-4 work. Adult All-on-4 is not covered by Medicare in most circumstances. We can discuss what your private health fund may cover at your consultation.
I live in South West Rocks / Crescent Head / Stuarts Head – is the Kempsey clinic the closest?
For most patients in the Macleay Valley, including South West Rocks, Crescent Head, Stuarts Point, Hat Head, Frederickton, Gladstone and Macksville, Sundial Dental Kempsey is the closest clinic with All-on-4 capability. We welcome patients from across the Macleay region.
Can I have All-on-4 done in Kempsey, or do I need to travel?
Sundial Dental Kempsey offers All-on-4 consultations and treatment locally on Belgrave Street. You do not need to travel to Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie or Sydney for routine implant work. Your full treatment, from consultation through to the final prosthesis and ongoing reviews, can be coordinated through the Kempsey clinic.
My partner is asking the questions – is that normal?
Very normal. A lot of our consultations include a partner, an adult child or another family member, and we encourage it. Major dental work is a household decision, not just an individual one. There is no awkwardness about having someone else in the room asking questions.
How often do I need to come back for reviews?
Annual professional reviews at minimum, often more frequently in the first year while everything settles. These can all be done at the Laurieton clinic so you do not need to travel for follow-up care. Daily home cleaning at home is also essential.
Will I be without teeth at any point?
Generally no. A temporary prosthesis is usually fitted on the same day as the implant surgery, so you leave the clinic with a working set of teeth. The final, permanent prosthesis is fitted after the healing period.
How much does All-on-4 cost in Laurieton?
Indicative costs typically range from $23,000 to $35,000 per arch, depending on the prosthesis material and individual treatment needs. Exact pricing is provided after a consultation and 3D scan. Sundial Dental does not provide pricing without an examination.
Will my pension cover any of the cost?
The age pension itself does not cover dental work. Some private health funds with major dental cover provide a partial rebate against dental implant items, subject to annual limits and waiting periods. Public dental services in NSW do not cover All-on-4 in most circumstances. We discuss the practical funding options at your consultation.
I am on blood thinners – can I still have implants?
Many patients on blood thinners can still have implants. The medication does not necessarily have to be stopped, but the surgical plan and timing may be adjusted in consultation with your GP or specialist. Tell us about every medication you take when you book.
How is the recovery if I am older?
Recovery in older patients is broadly similar to younger patients, with a few practical differences. Healing can be a little slower, certain medications may need to be paused around the surgery date (with your GP’s input), and the risk profile of any surgery is higher with age. Your dentist will discuss this with you specifically at the consultation and may liaise with your GP.
I live in Bonny Hills / Lake Cathie / North Haven / Dunbogan – is the Laurieton clinic the closest?
Yes. For Camden Haven residents in Bonny Hills, Lake Cathie, North Haven, Dunbogan, Lakewood, Kew, Kendall and surrounding areas, Sundial Dental Laurieton is the closest clinic with All-on-4 capability. The clinic is at the Medical Complex on Laurie Street with parking on site.
Can I have All-on-4 done in Laurieton, or do I need to drive to Port Macquarie?
Sundial Dental Laurieton offers All-on-4 consultations and treatment at the Medical Complex on Laurie Street. You do not need to drive to Port Macquarie or further afield for routine implant work. Your full treatment, from consultation through to the final prosthesis and ongoing reviews, can be coordinated through the Laurieton clinic.
Am I too old for All-on-4?
Age alone is not a barrier to All-on-4. What matters is your general health, how well your bone has held up, the medications you take and how you typically heal from minor surgery. Many patients in their seventies and eighties are good candidates. Some patients in their fifties are not. The only way to know is a consultation with a review of your medical history and 3D imaging.
How do I clean All-on-4 teeth?
Daily cleaning is essential. Most patients use a combination of brushing, interdental brushes, water flossing and a special floss designed for under-bridge cleaning. Your dentist will demonstrate the technique. Skipping daily cleaning is one of the main reasons implants run into trouble.
Can I eat normally with All-on-4?
Most patients eat a normal diet once the final prosthesis is in place and healing is complete. Very hard, very sticky or very tough foods are best avoided to protect the prosthesis. Your dentist will give specific advice based on your case.
What happens if an implant fails years later?
Implant failure is uncommon but possible. If it happens, the implant is usually removed and the area allowed to heal. Replacement is sometimes possible depending on the bone and the cause of failure. This is one of the reasons local follow-up matters.
Can I have All-on-4 in Port Macquarie if I live in Taree, Kempsey, Wauchope or Laurieton?
Yes. Sundial Dental serves patients from across the Mid North Coast. Complex implant work is generally coordinated through the Port Macquarie clinic, with check-ups and routine care available at your nearest Sundial location where appropriate.
What’s the difference between All-on-4 and All-on-6?
All-on-6 uses six implants instead of four to support the prosthesis. It may be considered when more bone is available and additional support is desired. Whether four or six implants is appropriate depends on individual anatomy. More implants is not automatically better.
How long do All-on-4 implants last?
Dental implants are generally considered a long-term tooth replacement. Individual results vary based on oral hygiene, general health, smoking, bite forces and maintenance. The prosthesis itself may need refurbishment or replacement at some point during the lifetime of the implants.
Can I use my superannuation to pay for All-on-4?
In specific circumstances, the ATO allows early release of superannuation for dental treatment. The criteria are strict and applications go through the ATO. This is not a quick or guaranteed pathway. Check the current ATO criteria before assuming eligibility.
Does Medicare or my health fund cover All-on-4?
Medicare does not cover All-on-4 in most cases. Private health funds with major dental cover typically provide a partial rebate against the implant items, subject to annual limits and waiting periods. Check directly with your fund using the item numbers on your treatment plan.
I’ve been told I don’t have enough bone for implants. Can I still have All-on-4?
Possibly. The angled implant placement used in All-on-4 is designed to make use of denser bone areas and often avoids the need for grafting. Whether it is appropriate in your case depends on a 3D scan and clinical examination. Many patients who have been told they need bone grafting for traditional implants are still candidates for All-on-4.
How long does the All-on-4 procedure take?
The surgery itself typically takes between two and four hours per arch. The full process, from initial consultation to final prosthesis, usually spans four to nine months because the implants need time to integrate with the bone.
Is All-on-4 surgery painful?
The surgery itself is performed under local anaesthetic, often with optional sedation, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some discomfort, swelling and bruising in the days afterwards is normal and is usually managed with prescribed and over-the-counter pain relief.
How much does All-on-4 cost in Port Macquarie?
Indicative costs typically range from $23,000 to $35,000 per arch in Port Macquarie, depending on the prosthesis material and individual treatment needs. Exact pricing requires a consultation and 3D scan.
Will I need to come back to the Taree clinic for follow-ups?
Yes. Routine reviews are an essential part of long-term implant success. Plan on at least annual professional cleans and check-ups, sometimes more often in the first year. These can all be done at the Taree clinic so you do not need to travel for follow-up care.
What if I’m anxious about the surgery?
Dental anxiety is common, especially around larger procedures. Sedation options are available for All-on-4 surgery and can be discussed at your consultation. We aim to give you enough information that you feel in control of the decision rather than rushed into it.
Does Sundial Dental Taree offer payment plans?
Yes. We work with several payment plan providers commonly used for dental treatment in Australia. Our team can walk you through the options at your consultation. We do not endorse any single provider, and we encourage you to compare terms before committing.
Can I claim All-on-4 on my private health fund?
Most private health funds with major dental cover provide a partial rebate against dental implant items, subject to annual limits and waiting periods. The rebate is usually a fraction of the total cost. We provide treatment plans with the relevant item numbers so you can check directly with your fund.
How long will I be without teeth?
Generally you will not be without teeth. A temporary prosthesis is usually fitted on the same day as the implant surgery, so you leave the clinic with a working set of teeth. The final, permanent prosthesis is fitted after the healing period, which is typically three to six months.
I’m in Wingham / Old Bar / Forster – can I have All-on-4 done at the Taree clinic?
Yes. Sundial Dental Taree welcomes patients from across the Manning Valley and Mid Coast, including Wingham, Old Bar, Cundletown, Tinonee, Harrington, Forster and Tuncurry. The Taree clinic is centrally located on Wynter Street with parking nearby.
How much time will I need to take off work for All-on-4 surgery?
Most patients plan for at least three to five days off work after surgery, although this varies depending on your job. Office work is usually possible within a few days. Physically demanding work may need a longer break. Your dentist will give individual advice based on your case and recovery.
Is the Taree clinic set up for the 3D imaging All-on-4 needs?
Yes. Modern implant planning requires 3D cone-beam (CBCT) imaging to assess bone volume and plan implant positions safely. This is part of the consultation process at our Taree clinic for any patient considering All-on-4.
How do I book an All-on-4 consultation at the Taree clinic?
Call (02) 6551 1005 or use the contact form on our website. The first appointment is a consultation, not surgery. We will examine your mouth, take a 3D scan if appropriate, and discuss whether All-on-4 is right for you. There is no obligation to proceed.
Do I have to travel to Port Macquarie for All-on-4, or can I have it done in Taree?
Sundial Dental Taree offers All-on-4 consultations and treatment locally. You do not need to drive to Port Macquarie for routine implant work. Your full treatment, from consultation through to final prosthesis and ongoing reviews, can be coordinated through the Taree clinic.
Can I have a payment plan?
Yes. Several third-party payment plan providers are commonly used for dental work in Australia, and our team can walk you through the options at your consultation. We do not endorse any single provider, and we encourage you to compare terms before committing.
What about long-term follow-up – do I have to keep going to a specialist?
No. Routine follow-up, cleans and reviews can all be done at the Wauchope clinic. The annual maintenance side of implant care is general dentistry, not specialist work, and it is the part that determines whether your implants are still doing their job in ten years.
Will I be without teeth at any point?
Generally no. A temporary prosthesis is usually fitted on the same day as the implant surgery, so you leave the clinic with a working set of teeth. The final, permanent prosthesis is fitted after the healing period, which is typically three to six months.
How long will I need to take off work for the surgery?
Most patients plan for at least three to five days off work. Office work is usually possible within a few days. Physical work, including farm and trades work, often needs longer. Your dentist will give individual advice based on your job and your case.
Is sedation available at the Wauchope clinic for All-on-4 surgery?
Sedation options for All-on-4 surgery can be discussed at your consultation. The right choice depends on your medical history, your anxiety level and the complexity of the case. Not every patient needs sedation, and not every patient should have it.
How much does All-on-4 cost in Wauchope?
Indicative costs typically range from $23,000 to $35,000 per arch, depending on the prosthesis material and your individual treatment needs. Exact pricing is provided after a consultation and 3D scan. Sundial Dental does not provide pricing without an examination.
Will I see the same dentist for the whole process?
Wherever possible, yes. Continuity of care is one of the advantages of a smaller country clinic over a large implant centre. The team that does your consultation and surgery is the team that handles your follow-ups, your reviews and any concerns down the track.
Is the Wauchope clinic actually equipped for implant surgery?
Yes. The Wauchope clinic is a fully-equipped general dentistry practice and is part of a five-clinic Mid North Coast group. 3D cone-beam (CBCT) imaging and modern implant planning are available as part of the consultation process.
I live in Comboyne / Beechwood / Pappinbarra – is the Wauchope clinic the closest?
For most patients in the Hastings hinterland, including Comboyne, Beechwood, Pappinbarra, Long Flat, Telegraph Point and Byabarra, Sundial Dental Wauchope is the closest clinic. We welcome patients from across the Hastings hinterland and the Camden Haven.
Can I have All-on-4 done in Wauchope, or do I need to drive to Port Macquarie?
Sundial Dental Wauchope offers All-on-4 consultations and treatment at the Hastings Street clinic. You do not need to drive to Port Macquarie or further afield for routine implant work. Your full treatment, from consultation through to the final prosthesis and ongoing reviews, can be coordinated through the Wauchope clinic.
How do I clean and care for my All-on-4 teeth?
While All-on-4 teeth cannot get cavities, the gums around the implants still need care to prevent infection.
Brushing: You brush them just like natural teeth, twice a day.
Flossing: Instead of standard floss, we recommend using a “water flosser” (like a Waterpik) or specialised super-floss to clean underneath the bridge where it meets the gum.
Professional Maintenance: You will need to visit us for regular check-ups. We may occasionally remove the bridge (which only a dentist can do) to give it a deep clean and check the health of the implants to ensure they last a lifetime.
Is the All-on-4 procedure painful?
We understand that the idea of oral surgery causes anxiety. At Sundial Dental, we prioritise your comfort. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, often combined with IV sedation (Sleep Dentistry). This means you will be in a state of deep relaxation or “twilight sleep” throughout the surgery. You will not feel pain, and you likely won’t remember much of the procedure afterwards. Post-surgery, most patients report that the discomfort is manageable with over-the-counter pain relief and subsides within a few days.
I have been told I don’t have enough bone for implants. Can I still have All-on-4?
Yes, in most cases, you can. Traditional dental implants require a significant amount of vertical bone height. If you have worn dentures for years, you may have suffered from bone resorption (shrinkage). The All-on-4 technique is unique because the two back implants are tilted at a 45-degree angle. This utilises the denser bone in the front of the jaw and avoids the need for complex bone grafting or sinus lifts. Many patients who were previously told they were not candidates for implants are successfully treated with All-on-4 at Sundial Dental.
Will I be left without teeth at any stage of the treatment?
No. This is one of the most common fears we hear, but we can reassure you: you will not leave our clinic without teeth. The All-on-4 procedure is often referred to as “Teeth in a Day.” On the day of your surgery, we place the implants and fit a temporary, fully functional bridge immediately. This allows you to smile and eat soft foods while your jaw heals and bonds with the implants. Once healing is complete (usually after 3–6 months), we replace the temporary bridge with your final, customised permanent bridge.
What is the difference between All-on-4 and traditional dentures?
The difference is life-changing. Traditional dentures sit on top of the gums and rely on suction or messy adhesives to stay in place. This often leads to slipping, sore spots, and a restricted diet (no steak or crunchy apples). All-on-4 uses four titanium implants strategically placed in the jawbone to act as anchors. A full arch of prosthetic teeth is then permanently fixed to these anchors.
Stability: They do not move, slip, or rub.
Function: You can eat whatever you like with up to 90% of natural chewing force (compared to roughly 20% with dentures).
Palate: The upper bridge does not cover the roof of your mouth, allowing you to taste food properly again.
Is there parking at the Laurieton clinic?
There’s free parking in the medical complex car park and along Laurie Street. The clinic is on the ground floor with level entry, so it’s easily accessible for wheelchairs, prams and walking frames.
Does the Laurieton clinic accept all health funds?
Yes. Sundial Dental Laurieton accepts all major health funds and processes claims on the spot through HICAPS. You typically only pay the gap (if any) at the time of your appointment.
Can I get a same-day emergency appointment if I live in Bonny Hills?
We hold emergency slots every working day at our Laurieton clinic. Call (02) 6559 9276 as early as possible and we’ll do our best to see you the same day. Bonny Hills is only about 10 minutes away, so you can get here quickly when it counts.
Does Sundial Dental bulk bill for children in Bonny Hills?
Yes. We bulk bill eligible children under the Australian Government’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). This covers up to $1,095 in dental treatment over two consecutive calendar years. We can check your child’s eligibility when you book.
How far is Sundial Dental Laurieton from Bonny Hills?
Sundial Dental Laurieton is about 10 to 12 minutes south of Bonny Hills along Ocean Drive. The clinic is at the Medical Complex, 16-18 Laurie Street, Laurieton. Busways route 334 also connects Bonny Hills to Laurieton if you prefer public transport.
At what age should children have their first check-up?
We recommend bringing your child in for their first “ride in the chair” around the age of two or three, or earlier if you have concerns. Early visits help children get used to the sights and sounds of the dental clinic in a fun, low-stress way, setting the foundation for a lifetime of positive oral health habits.
Why do I need X-rays if my teeth feel fine?
Many dental issues, such as decay between teeth, bone loss, or infections at the root, are not visible to the naked eye during a visual exam. Digital X-rays allow us to see “beneath the surface” and diagnose potential problems before they cause pain or require complex treatment.
Does a professional scale and clean hurt?
Our team is known for their gentle touch. While you may feel some vibration or pressure during the cleaning process, we strive to make it as comfortable as possible. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, please let us know beforehand—we can use desensitising pastes or numbing gels to ensure you are comfortable throughout.
I haven’t been to a dentist in years. Will I be scolded?
Absolutely not. This is a very common fear, but please know that at Sundial Dental, we are a strictly judgement-free zone. We do not care how long it has been since your last visit, and we will not lecture you. Our only concern is diagnosing your pain and helping you feel comfortable and healthy again.
How often should I visit the dentist for a check-up?
For most patients, we recommend a check-up and clean every six months. This regular interval allows us to remove plaque build-up before it turns into a major issue and to catch any early signs of decay or gum disease. However, depending on your specific oral health needs, we may recommend a personalised schedule that suits you best.
Why do I need a crown after a root canal?
After a root canal, the tooth loses its internal blood supply and can become brittle and prone to fracturing under the pressure of chewing. Placing a crown over the tooth acts like a protective helmet, ensuring the tooth remains strong enough to function normally.
Will the crown look natural?
Yes. We use modern ceramic and zirconia materials that mimic the translucency and colour of natural tooth enamel. We colour-match the restoration to your surrounding teeth so that it blends in seamlessly with your smile.
How long do crowns or bridges last?
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, a high-quality crown or bridge can last 10–15 years or even longer. However, habits like teeth grinding, biting on ice, or poor brushing can reduce their lifespan.
Does getting a crown or bridge hurt?
We perform the preparation stage under local anaesthetic, so the area will be completely numb, and you should not feel any pain. If you are nervous, please let us know—we are committed to making your experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
What is the difference between a crown and a bridge?
A crown is used to repair and cover a single damaged tooth that is still present in the mouth. A bridge is used to replace a missing tooth (or teeth) by using the adjacent teeth as anchors. Essentially, a bridge is often made of three or more crowns fused together.
What happens if I don’t have enough bone for the dental implant?
If you have experienced bone loss due to missing teeth, you may still be a candidate for implants. We can often perform a bone graft to build up the area, or use specialised techniques (like All-on-4 or subperiosteal implants) that utilise the available bone. We will assess your specific situation during your consultation.
Are dental implants safe?
Dental implant therapy is a well-established procedure with a high success rate (over 95%) when performed by trained professionals. Titanium has been used in medical procedures for decades because it is “biocompatible,” meaning the body accepts it without rejection.f
Can implants replace all my teeth?
Yes. Implants are incredibly versatile. We can use a single implant to replace one tooth, or multiple implants to support a fixed bridge. For patients missing all their teeth, we offer full-arch solutions (like All-on-4), where a complete set of artificial teeth is supported by just four to six implants.
How long do dental implants last?
With proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution, often lasting 15 to 25 years or even a lifetime. While the implant screw itself is extremely durable, the crown on top may need replacing eventually due to normal wear and tear, just like a natural tooth.
Do dental implants hurt?
We strive to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. The placement is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning the area is completely numb. Most patients report that the procedure causes less discomfort than a tooth extraction. Any post-surgical soreness can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relief and subsides within a few days.
Do dentures last forever?
No. Over time, your jawbone naturally shrinks and changes shape, which means your dentures may become loose. Most dentures need to be relined, rebased, or remade every 5 to 7 years to ensure they continue to fit securely and comfortably.
How do I clean my dentures?
Dentures should be brushed daily with a soft brush and a specific denture cleaner (not regular toothpaste, which can be too abrasive). When not in your mouth, they should be kept moist in water or a denture soaking solution to prevent them from drying out and warping.
Can I sleep with my dentures in?
We generally recommend removing your dentures at night. This gives your gum tissue a chance to rest and “breathe” while you sleep, which helps prevent fungal infections and keeps your mouth healthy.
How long does it take to get used to dentures?
New dentures can feel bulky or strange for the first few weeks as your tongue and cheek muscles learn to hold them in place. You may also experience increased saliva flow initially. This is normal, and with practice, speaking and eating will become natural again.
Will my dentures look natural?
Yes. Modern denture teeth are made from high-quality materials that come in various shapes, sizes, and shades. We work with you to select teeth that suit your age and facial features, ensuring the result looks natural rather than “perfectly white and fake.”
What if my child knocks out a baby tooth?
If your child knocks out a primary (baby) tooth, do not try to push it back into the gum, as this can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Keep your child calm, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and call us immediately so we can check for any remaining tooth fragments or trauma to the surrounding gums.
How much will an emergency dental visit cost?
The cost depends on what is causing your pain and what treatment is required to fix it. We understand that dental emergencies are an unexpected expense. That is why we will always provide a clear quote before beginning any treatment. To help you manage the cost, we offer flexible payment plans.
Can I just go to the hospital emergency department for a toothache?
Hospital emergency departments are vital for severe facial swelling that restricts breathing or swallowing, or for major facial trauma. However, hospitals generally do not have dentists on staff. If you go to the hospital for a standard toothache, they can usually only provide temporary pain relief or antibiotics. You will still need to see a dentist to actually fix the tooth and remove the source of the infection.
What will happen during my emergency appointment?
Our first and most important goal is to get you out of pain. When you arrive, we will typically take a focused x-ray of the problem area to diagnose the issue. Your dentist will then explain exactly what is going on and give you options to relieve the pain immediately—whether that involves a prescription for antibiotics, starting a root canal to remove the infected nerve, or performing an extraction. We will never start treatment without explaining the process and the costs to you first.
Is a toothache really considered an emergency?
Yes. A toothache is your body’s warning system telling you that something is wrong. Dental pain rarely goes away on its own, and if left untreated, a simple cavity can quickly turn into a severe infection or abscess. If your toothache is keeping you awake, causing you to take painkillers, or is accompanied by swelling, it is absolutely a dental emergency. Please call us.
Do you use silver or white fillings?
At Sundial Dental, we primarily use tooth-coloured (composite) materials. These bond to the tooth structure and provide a natural appearance, so no one needs to know you have had dental work done. If you have questions about material options, we are happy to discuss them during your consultation.
Will my tooth be sensitive after the filling?
It is common to experience some mild sensitivity to cold or pressure for a few days after receiving a filling. If the filling was deep (close to the nerve), this may last a little longer. This usually settles down on its own, but if the sensitivity persists or you experience spontaneous pain, please contact us for a review.
What is the difference between a filling and an onlay?
A standard filling is used to repair small to medium cavities. An onlay is used when the damage is more extensive and affects the “cusps” (the biting points) of the tooth. An onlay covers the biting surface to protect the tooth from fracturing under pressure, offering a middle ground between a simple filling and a full crown.
How soon can I eat after getting my filling?
With modern tooth-coloured fillings, the material is hardened immediately with a curing light, so you can chew on it right away. However, we strongly recommend waiting until the local anaesthetic wears off before eating. This is to prevent you from accidentally biting your lip, cheek, or tongue while it is numb.
Does getting a filling hurt?
We take great care to ensure your procedure is as comfortable as possible. Before using local anaesthetic, we apply a numbing gel to the gum to minimise the sensation of the injection. Once the area is numb, you should not feel any pain during the drilling or filling process, though you may feel some vibration.
Why is Dr. Peter Elfar’s experience important?
Dr. Elfar was the first dentist in Australia to offer this treatment and has years of experience performing the specific LANAP protocol. This experience is crucial because LANAP is not just about using a laser; it is a strict, step-by-step methodology that requires specific training and the correct settings to achieve tissue regeneration.
Can I eat normally after the gum disease treatment?
For the first few days, we will ask you to stick to a soft diet (like soup, yoghurt, and eggs) to protect the new blood clots that have formed to seal your gums. You should avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods for a short period. We will provide you with detailed dietary instructions to ensure the best possible healing.
Will my gum disease come back after LANAP?
LANAP is highly effective at halting gum disease, but it is not a “cure” that allows you to neglect your teeth. Periodontal disease is a chronic condition. To maintain your results, you must commit to excellent home care and regular maintenance visits (usually every 3 months initially) to ensure the bacteria remains under control.
How many visits will I need to treat my gum disease?
The LANAP protocol is typically completed in two half-mouth sessions, usually scheduled within a few weeks of each other. This allows us to focus on one side of your mouth at a time. After the treatment, we will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your healing and adjust your bite if necessary.
Is the LANAP procedure painful?
Most patients find the procedure very tolerable. We use local anaesthetic to numb the area, just like we would for a filling. Because there is no cutting or stitching involved, post-operative discomfort is usually minimal and can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relief if needed.
Can I have both gummy smile treatments?
Yes. In some cases, a patient may have both excess gum tissue and a hyperactive lip. We can combine laser contouring to lengthen the teeth and injections to control lip movement for the best possible aesthetic result.
Will injections affect my ability to speak or eat?
When performed by a trained professional, the dosage is carefully calculated to only relax the specific muscles that lift the lip too high. It should not affect your ability to chew, speak, or smile naturally—it simply limits the “over-lifting” of the lip.
How long do the muscle relaxant injections last?
The effects of muscle relaxant injections typically last between 3 and 4 months. As the product wears off, your lip muscles will regain their full strength, and the gummy smile will gradually return. Regular maintenance appointments are needed to keep the effect.
Do the gums grow back after contouring?
In most cases, gum contouring is a long-lasting procedure. Once the excess tissue is removed and the bone level is appropriate, the gum line stabilizes at its new position. However, maintaining good oral hygiene is essential to prevent inflammation or swelling.
Is gum contouring painful?
We perform gum contouring using a local anaesthetic, so the area is completely numb during the procedure. Because we use a laser, which seals the tissue as it works, post-operative pain is usually mild and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
We understand that life happens. If you need to change your appointment, we kindly ask for at least 24 to 48 hours’ notice. This allows us to offer that time to another patient who may be waiting for care.
What are your opening hours?
Our clinics generally operate Monday through Friday, with specific hours varying slightly by location. We recommend checking the individual page for your local clinic or calling us for the most up-to-date schedule, including any late-night or emergency availability.
How can I book an appointment?
We offer flexible booking options. You can call your preferred clinic directly to speak with our friendly reception team, or you can use our online booking system available through our website to select a time that suits your schedule.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
To ensure your visit is as smooth as possible, please bring your Medicare card, private health insurance card (if applicable), and a list of any current medications you are taking. If you have had dental X-rays taken elsewhere in the last 12 months, let us know so we can request them.
Do I need to have private health insurance to visit?
No, we welcome all patients, whether you have private health insurance or not. For those with insurance, we provide HICAPS facilities at all our clinics, allowing you to claim your rebate on the spot so you only pay the “gap” amount.
Where are your clinics located?
Sundial Dental is proud to serve the Mid North Coast with five convenient locations: Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Laurieton, Taree, and Kempsey. You can find specific addresses and contact details for each branch on our Locations Page.
Will Invisalign affect my speech?
Like any dental appliance, there may be a slight adjustment period. You might notice a minor lisp for the first day or two as your tongue gets used to the aligners. However, most patients adapt very quickly, and their speech returns to normal almost immediately.
How do I clean the aligners?
You should rinse your aligners every time you take them out. To clean them thoroughly, gently brush them with a soft toothbrush and water (avoiding hot water, which can warp the plastic). We can also recommend specific cleaning crystals or tablets to keep them fresh.
Can I eat whatever I want with Invisalign?
Yes! This is one of the biggest advantages of Invisalign. Because you remove the aligners before meals, there are no food restrictions. You can continue to enjoy apples, popcorn, and sticky foods that would normally be off-limits with traditional braces.
Is the Invisalign treatment painful?
Invisalign is generally more comfortable than metal braces. However, when you first switch to a new set of aligners, you may feel some pressure or minor discomfort for a day or two. This is actually a good sign it means the aligners are working to gently move your teeth.
How many hours a day do I need to wear my Invisalign Aligners?
For the treatment to work effectively, you must wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day. You should only take them out to eat, drink (anything other than water), and clean your teeth. Consistency is key to finishing your treatment on time.
Do you accept health funds and offer payment plans?
We believe financial stress should not stand in the way of high-quality dental care, so we offer a range of options to suit different budgets.

This allows you to get the treatment you need immediately and spread the cost over manageable weekly or fortnightly installments. We will always provide a clear, written quote before any work begins so there are no surprises.
Is your Kempsey clinic kid-friendly?
We love treating local families! We recommend bringing your child in for their first visit around their first birthday to get them used to the chair in a fun, positive way. To make family care more affordable, we proudly process the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which covers essential dental care for eligible kids. If you aren’t sure if your child is eligible, just bring your Medicare card to our Belgrave Street reception and we can check for you instantly.

We are always warmly welcoming new patients from across the Macleay Valley, and we proudly run a strictly judgement-free practice. Whether it has been six months or ten years since your last visit, you will be treated with respect and empathy.

Can I get a crown done in a single visit in Laurieton?
Yes. Our Laurieton practice is equipped with state-of-the-art CEREC technology, allowing us to offer “same-day crowns.”
The Old Way: Traditionally, a crown required two visits. You would have a messy impression taken, wear a temporary plastic crown for two weeks (which could fall off), and then return for the final fitting.
The Sundial Way: We use a digital 3D scanner to map your tooth instantly. We then design and mill your permanent ceramic crown right here in the clinic while you wait. You walk out of your single appointment with your tooth fully restored, saving you time and the hassle of a second injection.

How long does a mouthguard last?
For children and teens, mouthguards may need replacing every season as their teeth and jaws grow. For adults, a high-quality sports guard or night splint can last several years with proper care, though we recommend checking it annually.
Can I wear my sports guard at night for grinding?
No. Sports mouthguards are designed to be thicker and rubbery to absorb heavy impacts, which can actually encourage you to chew on them if worn while sleeping. Night splints are made from a harder, smoother material specifically designed to withstand grinding forces and allow your jaw to slide naturally.
Does a night splint stop grinding completely?
A splint does not necessarily “cure” the habit of grinding (which is often related to stress or sleep patterns), but it protects your teeth from the damage caused by grinding. By providing a cushioning barrier, it prevents wear, cracks, and jaw strain.
How do I clean my mouthguard?
After every use, rinse your mouthguard with cool, soapy water and allow it to air dry in its container. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the shape. We also recommend bringing it to your regular dental check-ups so we can inspect it for wear and tear.
Why can’t I just use a chemist mouthguard?
Store-bought “boil-and-bite” mouthguards often fit poorly, feel bulky, and can dislodge easily upon impact. A custom-fitted guard offers significantly higher protection because it is moulded to your exact bite, distributing the force of a blow more evenly to prevent injury.
Is there parking at Sundial Dental Laurieton?
Yes. There is free parking directly outside the clinic at 16-18 Laurie Street, Laurieton, including disability parking spaces. The clinic is located in the Medical Complex and is accessible from street level.

Can I get complex Dental Implants and Gum Surgery without leaving Port Macquarie?
Absolutely. Many patients assume they need to travel to Newcastle or Sydney for complex oral surgery, but Sundial Dental Port Macquarie is equipped to handle advanced restorative cases in-house.
Dental Implants: Whether you are missing a single tooth or need a full-arch reconstruction (All-on-4), Dr Peter Elfar and the team use 3D CBCT imaging to plan and place implants with precision right here in our clinic.
LANAP Gum Therapy: We use the FDA-cleared LANAP protocol to treat moderate to severe gum disease. This laser technology selectively removes diseased tissue while leaving healthy tissue intact, often resulting in less pain and faster recovery compared to traditional gum surgery.
Sedation & Anxiety: If you are nervous about these procedures, we offer anxiety management options to ensure you are relaxed throughout your treatment. By keeping these services in Port Macquarie, we ensure you have continuity of care with a team that knows your dental history.
Does your Port Macquarie team accept health funds, CDBS, and payment plans?
We believe that high-quality dental care should be accessible to everyone in Port Macquarie. We offer a variety of payment options to suit your budget:
Health Funds: We accept all major private health funds (Bupa, Medibank, HCF, Nib, etc.). With our on-site HICAPS machine, we can process your claim instantly, meaning you only pay the “gap” difference on the day.

DVA: We are proud to support our veterans and fully accept Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold and White Cards for subsidised treatment.
Payment Plans: We understand that some dental work is an unexpected expense. We offer flexible payment solutions (such as Zip Pay, Afterpay, or specialized medical finance) to help you spread the cost of treatment over time. Please ask our reception team for details.
Do you offer same-day crowns at the Port Macquarie clinic, and how does it work?
Yes, we do. Our Port Macquarie practice is one of the few in the region equipped with the complete CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) system. This technology allows us to restore a damaged tooth in a single appointment, eliminating the need for temporary crowns, messy impressions, and a second visit weeks later.
The Process: Instead of using a tray filled with “goop” to take a mould of your teeth, we use a specialized 3D camera to scan your tooth digitally.
The Design: You can watch on the screen as your dentist designs your custom crown to fit your bite perfectly.
The Milling: That digital design is sent to our on-site milling machine, which carves your crown from a solid block of high-quality ceramic in about 10–15 minutes.
The Result: We bond the permanent crown to your tooth immediately. You walk out of our Gordon Street clinic with your smile fully restored, saving you travel time and requiring only one injection.
How quickly can I see an Emergency Dentist in Port Macquarie?
We understand that dental pain can be debilitating. At Sundial Dental Port Macquarie, we prioritize emergency cases and set aside dedicated appointment blocks every single day to accommodate urgent issues.
When to call: If you have a severe toothache, a knocked-out tooth, a facial swelling, or a broken crown, please call (02) 6583 3533 immediately. Do not wait for the pain to “go away,” as infections can spread quickly.
What to expect: Our primary goal during an emergency visit is to get you out of pain. We will triage your condition, take necessary X-rays to diagnose the problem, and provide immediate treatment (such as dressing the tooth, starting antibiotics, or performing an extraction if necessary).
New Patients: You do not need to be a regular patient of ours to access emergency care. We serve the entire Port Macquarie community and visitors to the region who find themselves in need of urgent help.
Where is the Port Macquarie dental clinic located and is there parking?
Sundial Dental Port Macquarie is centrally located at Suite 7, 133–137 Gordon Street. We are situated in the professional suites, easily accessible for patients coming from the CBD or surrounding suburbs like Lighthouse Beach or Settlement City.

Which type of retainer is better: fixed or removable?
Both have pros and cons. A fixed retainer is great because you can’t forget to wear it, but it makes flossing slightly harder. A removable retainer is easy to clean, but requires discipline to wear every night. We often recommend a combination of both for the best protection.
Can I eat with my retainer in?
No. You must remove your removable retainer before eating or drinking anything other than water. Chewing food with the retainer in can crack the plastic or bend the wire, and hot drinks can distort the shape.
What happens if I lose my retainer?
Contact us immediately. Teeth can begin to shift surprisingly quickly—sometimes within a few days—if the retainer is not worn. The sooner we can fit you for a replacement, the less likely it is that you will need further treatment to correct any relapse.
How do I clean my removable retainer?
You should clean your retainer every morning when you brush your teeth. Use a soft toothbrush and cool water (or a mild soap). Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic, and avoid abrasive toothpaste, which can scratch the surface and make it look cloudy.
How long do I have to wear a retainer?
The general rule in modern orthodontics is “retention is for life.” While you may be able to reduce wear to just a few nights a week eventually, you should expect to wear some form of retainer indefinitely. If you stop wearing it, your teeth will likely move.
What causes the infection in the first place?
The most common causes are deep decay (cavities) that reach the nerve, repeated dental procedures on the same tooth, or a crack/chip in the tooth. Sometimes, a trauma (like a knock to the face) can damage the pulp even if there are no visible chips or cracks.
Why do I need a crown afterwards?
After the pulp is removed, the tooth no longer has a blood supply keeping it hydrated from the inside, making it more brittle and prone to fracture. Placing a crown over the tooth acts like a helmet, protecting it from the heavy forces of chewing and ensuring it lasts for many years.
Will the tooth be dead after the root canal treatment?
The tooth will no longer have a nerve, so it won’t feel hot or cold sensations, but it is not “dead” in the structural sense. It remains attached to your jawbone via the periodontal ligaments and will function just like your other teeth.
Why shouldn’t I just have the tooth pulled?
While extraction might seem like a quick fix, missing teeth can cause long-term issues. Your remaining teeth may shift position, affecting your bite, and the jawbone can deteriorate over time. Replacing a missing tooth with an implant or bridge is also generally more expensive and complex than saving the natural tooth with a root canal.
Is root canal treatment painful?
This is the most common myth in dentistry. With modern anaesthetics and techniques, the procedure itself is typically painless and comparable to getting a filling. The pain associated with root canals usually comes from the infection before the treatment. The procedure is designed to eliminate that pain, not cause it.

Can I whiten my teeth if I have gum disease?
We generally recommend treating any underlying gum issues or cavities before starting a whitening course. Whitening agents can cause pain or irritation if they penetrate into a cavity or inflamed gums. A check-up allows us to clear you for treatment safely.
Will teeth whitening damage my enamel?
No. When performed under the supervision of a dental professional, teeth whitening is a safe procedure that does not damage the structural integrity of your enamel. We monitor your oral health to ensure your gums and teeth remain healthy throughout the process.
What is the difference between your teeth whitening kits and supermarket ones?
Store-bought kits and online gels are often “one size fits all.” The trays may not fit well, leading to gel leaking onto your gums (causing burns) or saliva washing the gel away. Professional kits use custom-moulded trays that keep the gel precisely against your teeth, and the gel itself is often stronger and more effective than what is legally available in supermarkets.
How long do the results of teeth whitening last?
This largely depends on your lifestyle. If you smoke or consume a lot of staining foods and drinks, the brightness may fade faster. Generally, with good oral hygiene and occasional “top-up” treatments using your home kit, results can be maintained for 1–3 years.
Is teeth whitening painful?
Most people find the process comfortable, though some patients may experience mild temporary sensitivity to cold during or after treatment. This usually subsides within 24–48 hours. We use high-quality gels designed to minimise sensitivity, and we can recommend desensitising toothpaste if needed.
Is the tooth bonding process reversible?
Yes. Because we remove very little (if any) natural tooth structure during the preparation, bonding is considered a reversible treatment. If you decide later to upgrade to porcelain veneers, the bonding material can be removed.
Can I whiten my bonded teeth?
No. The whitening gel will only affect your natural tooth enamel; it will not change the colour of the bonding resin. If you are planning to whiten your teeth, we recommend doing so before your bonding procedure so we can match the resin to your new, brighter shade.
Will the tooth bonding stain?
Composite resin is slightly porous, meaning it can pick up stains over time from coffee, tea, red wine, or smoking. Unlike porcelain, which resists stains well, bonding may need to be polished or replaced eventually to keep it looking bright.
How long does tooth bonding last?
While not as durable as porcelain veneers, composite bonding is a long-lasting solution. On average, it lasts between 5 and 7 years. Its lifespan depends heavily on your habits—if you bite your nails or chew on ice, the bonding material can chip just like natural enamel.
Does the tooth bonding procedure hurt?
In most cases, no. Because we are usually just adding material to the surface of the tooth rather than drilling into it, tooth bonding is typically painless and often performed without the need for local anaesthetic (injections).
What is the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?
Porcelain veneers are made in a lab, are stronger, resist staining better, and last longer (10–15 years). Composite veneers are built directly on the tooth by the dentist in one visit using resin. While composite is more affordable and quicker, it is more prone to staining and chipping over time.
Do I need to numb my mouth to get veneers?
For most veneer preparations, we remove a very thin layer of enamel, which can be sensitive. Therefore, we typically use a local anaesthetic to ensure you are completely comfortable throughout the procedure.
Will the veneers look like fake teeth?
Not at Sundial Dental. We work with skilled technicians to layer the material so it has the same translucency and texture as natural enamel. We also carefully select the shade to match your complexion and surrounding teeth, ensuring the result looks authentic, not “flat” or “too white.”
How long do veneers last?
On average, porcelain veneers last between 10 and 15 years, often longer with excellent oral hygiene. Composite veneers typically last 4–7 years. Their lifespan depends on how well you care for them—avoiding habits like nail-biting or chewing ice is crucial.
Are veneers permanent?
While veneers are a long-lasting solution, they are not “permanent” forever—they will eventually need to be replaced. However, the procedure itself is considered irreversible. Because we typically remove a thin layer of natural enamel to fit the veneer, your tooth will always require a covering to be protected.

Is the Wauchope clinic equipped for same-day crowns?

How it works: If you need a crown, we use a specialized 3D digital scanner to map your tooth (no messy impression paste). We then design your restoration digitally and mill it from a high-strength ceramic block using our in-house milling machine.
The Benefit: This means you can walk in with a broken tooth and walk out with a permanent, high-quality ceramic crown in a single visit. There is no need for a temporary crown and no need to drive out of town for multiple appointments.
I have a severe toothache. Do you provide emergency dental in Wauchope?
Yes. We firmly believe that Wauchope residents deserve immediate access to emergency dental care right here in their own community. We reserve appointments every day specifically for emergencies at our Hastings Street clinic.
When to call: If you are experiencing throbbing pain, a facial swelling, have had an accident (like a knocked-out tooth), or have broken a denture, please call (02) 6585 2015 immediately.
Our approach: Our local team is equipped to handle trauma and acute pain on-site. We can perform emergency extractions, root canal alleviation, or temporary repairs to get you comfortable again without you needing to travel elsewhere.
Where is the Wauchope dental clinic located, and is there parking?
Sundial Dental Wauchope is conveniently located at 51 Hastings Street, right in the heart of town. We are situated in a prime location that makes visiting us simple for locals and those travelling from the Hinterland.
Parking: One of the benefits of visiting our Wauchope clinic is the stress-free parking. There is ample street parking available directly near the practice on Hastings Street. This ensures easy access for families with prams and elderly patients who prefer a shorter walk to the door.
Accessibility: Our practice is designed to be accessible. If you require wheelchair access or assistance entering the building, please let our friendly team know when booking, and we will be ready to assist you upon arrival.
What is an “impacted” tooth?
A tooth is “impacted” when it is blocked from entering the mouth normally. It might be stuck under the gum, trapped in the jawbone, or growing sideways against the tooth in front of it. Impacted teeth are harder to clean and are prone to causing infection or decay in the adjacent healthy tooth.
Do I have to go to hospital to have my wisdom teeth removed?
Most wisdom teeth removals can be performed right here in our dental chair using local anaesthetic. However, for very complex cases or for patients who prefer to be fully asleep (under general anaesthetic), we can arrange a referral to a specialist oral surgeon or hospital.
Can I eat normally after my wisdom teeth are removed?
For the first few days, you should stick to a soft diet—think yoghurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and lukewarm soups. You should strictly avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods, and do not use a straw, as the sucking motion can dislodge the blood clot and cause a painful condition known as “dry socket.”
How long does wisdom teeth removal recovery take?
Most patients can return to normal light activities within 1 to 2 days, though full healing of the gum takes a few weeks. We recommend taking it easy and avoiding strenuous exercise for at least 48 hours after the procedure to prevent bleeding.
Does having wisdom teeth out hurt?
You shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure itself because we use a strong local anaesthetic to numb the area completely. After the numbness wears off, it is normal to experience some swelling and discomfort for a few days. We will provide advice on pain relief medication to keep you comfortable during your recovery.
