Who May Not Be a Candidate

All-on-4 is not suitable for everyone. Some conditions can affect healing or the long-term success of implants. Factors your dentist will assess include:

• Uncontrolled diabetes – can slow healing and increase infection risk
• Heavy smoking – affects how well the implants integrate with bone
• Certain medications such as bisphosphonates (commonly prescribed for osteoporosis), which can affect jaw bone healing
• Significant bone loss in the jaw – though the angled implant technique used in All-on-4 reduces the need for bone grafts in many cases

Consultation and imaging

A thorough examination, 3D cone-beam (CBCT) imaging and a conversation about your goals, medical history and budget. You leave with a written treatment plan and an honest answer about whether All-on-4 is the right option.

Surgery day

Any remaining teeth are extracted. Four implants are placed – two straight at the front of the arch, two angled at the back. A temporary prosthesis is fitted the same day, so you leave the clinic with a functioning set of teeth.

Healing period

Typically three to six months while the implants integrate with the bone. During this time you wear the temporary prosthesis and return for scheduled check-ups. Diet is restricted to soft foods initially, then expands gradually as healing progresses.

Final prosthesis

Once the implants have integrated, impressions are taken and the final prosthesis is made and fitted. This is the long-term set of teeth you will wear going forward.

Ongoing maintenance

First few days

Swelling, bruising and discomfort are normal and managed with prescribed pain relief. Plan to rest. Driving home after sedation is not safe, so arrange a lift in advance.

First few weeks

Soft food only. Office work is usually possible within three to five days. Physically demanding work, including farm and trades work, often needs longer. Talk to your dentist about your specific situation when planning the surgery date.

Three to six months

The implants integrate with the bone. You wear the temporary prosthesis. Diet gradually expands as healing progresses, on your dentist’s advice. The final prosthesis is fitted at the end of this period.

Long-term

Annual reviews at minimum. The first year usually involves more frequent check-ups while everything settles. Daily home care – brushing, interdental brushes and specialised floss for under-bridge cleaning – is essential. All of this follow-up can be done at the Wauchope clinic.
