What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable dental appliances designed to replace missing teeth and surrounding gum tissue. Unlike the “false teeth” of the past, modern dentures are made from advanced acrylics and resins that mimic the look of natural enamel and gum tissue. They are designed to support your facial muscles (preventing that “sunken” look often associated with tooth loss) and restore your ability to eat a varied diet.

Types of Dentures We Offer

We provide personalised solutions depending on how many teeth you are missing:

Complete (Full) Dentures

These are used when all natural teeth in the upper or lower jaw have been removed. They sit on top of the gums and rely on suction (or denture adhesive) for stability.

Partial Dentures

These are used when you still have some healthy natural teeth remaining. The artificial teeth are attached to a gum-coloured base, often connected by a metal or flexible framework that clips onto your existing teeth for support.

Implant-Retained Dentures

For patients seeking extra stability, we can combine dentures with dental implants. The denture “snaps” onto the implants, preventing it from slipping while speaking or eating.

How the Process Works

Creating a comfortable denture is a process that requires precision and patience.

Consultation: We assess your mouth and discuss your goals.
Impressions: We take precise moulds or digital scans of your jaws to ensure an accurate fit.
Try-In: You will often have a “try-in” appointment where we check the shape, colour, and fit of the teeth in wax before the final denture is made. This allows you to approve the look of your new smile.
Fitting: Your final dentures are fitted, and we make any necessary adjustments to ensure they sit comfortably against your gums.

Will my dentures look natural?

Yes. Modern denture teeth are made from high-quality materials that come in various shapes, sizes, and shades. We work with you to select teeth that suit your age and facial features, ensuring the result looks natural rather than “perfectly white and fake.”

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

New dentures can feel bulky or strange for the first few weeks as your tongue and cheek muscles learn to hold them in place. You may also experience increased saliva flow initially. This is normal, and with practice, speaking and eating will become natural again.

Can I sleep with my dentures in?

We generally recommend removing your dentures at night. This gives your gum tissue a chance to rest and “breathe” while you sleep, which helps prevent fungal infections and keeps your mouth healthy.

How do I clean my dentures?

Dentures should be brushed daily with a soft brush and a specific denture cleaner (not regular toothpaste, which can be too abrasive). When not in your mouth, they should be kept moist in water or a denture soaking solution to prevent them from drying out and warping.

Do dentures last forever?

No. Over time, your jawbone naturally shrinks and changes shape, which means your dentures may become loose. Most dentures need to be relined, rebased, or remade every 5 to 7 years to ensure they continue to fit securely and comfortably.
