Dental emergencies can be overwhelming, stressful, and incredibly painful. At Sundial Dental, we understand that a severe toothache or a broken tooth cannot wait.

That is why we reserve dedicated emergency appointments every single day across our clinics in Port Macquarie, Taree, Laurieton, Wauchope, and Kempsey. Our goal is to see you as quickly as possible, diagnose the problem, and get you out of pain today.

We provide a calm, judgement-free environment. Even if it has been years since you last visited a dentist, our only priority is helping you feel better.

What is Considered a Dental Emergency?

If you are in severe pain or have suffered trauma to your mouth, you likely need emergency care. Please contact us immediately if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Severe, Throbbing Toothache: Pain that keeps you awake at night or radiates to your jaw, ear, or neck.
  • Facial Swelling or Abscess: A swollen face or a pimple-like bump on your gums indicates a serious infection that requires immediate attention to prevent it from spreading.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: Time is critical! A knocked-out adult tooth can often be saved if you see a dentist within 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Broken or Chipped Tooth: Whether from an injury or biting down on something hard, a broken tooth can expose the sensitive nerve.
  • Lost Crown or Filling: This can leave the tooth vulnerable to further damage and highly sensitive to hot and cold.
  • Dental Trauma: Any sporting injury, fall, or accident that causes bleeding or damage to the teeth, lips, or gums.

What to Do Before You Arrive

Taking the right steps immediately after an injury can save your tooth. Here is what to do while you are on your way to our clinic:

  • For a Knocked-Out Tooth: Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root. Do not rinse it with water. If possible, gently place it back in the socket and bite down on a clean cloth. If you cannot, place the tooth in a small container of milk or your own saliva and bring it with you.
  • For Swelling: Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to help reduce swelling and numb the pain.
  • For a Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and gently floss around the sore tooth to ensure no food debris is causing the pressure. Take over-the-counter pain relief (like paracetamol or ibuprofen) as directed, but do not place aspirin directly on your gums, as it will cause chemical burns.
