At Sundial Dental, we offer tooth bonding (also known as composite bonding) across our Mid North Coast clinics. It is one of the easiest, fastest, and most affordable ways to improve the appearance of your smile.

What Is Tooth Bonding?

Tooth bonding is a cosmetic procedure where a dentist applies a tooth-coloured composite resin (the same material used for white fillings) to your teeth to repair damage or improve their appearance. Unlike veneers or crowns, which are made in a lab and require significant tooth preparation, bonding is an “additive” procedure. The dentist sculpts the material directly onto your tooth to change its shape, size, or colour.

How the Treatment Works

One of the biggest advantages of bonding is that it can usually be completed in a single appointment, often without the need for anaesthetic.

Colour Matching: We select a shade of composite resin that perfectly matches your natural tooth enamel.
Preparation: The surface of the tooth is roughened slightly, and a conditioning liquid is applied. This helps the bonding material adhere securely to the tooth.
Application: The dentist applies the putty-like resin, moulding and smoothing it to the desired shape.
Curing: A special blue light is used to harden the material in seconds.
Polishing: Finally, we trim and polish the bonded area so it feels smooth and has the same sheen as the rest of your tooth.

Who Is This Treatment For?

Tooth bonding is an excellent solution for minor cosmetic fixes. It is ideal if you have:

Chipped or cracked teeth: Restoring the lost structure and preventing the crack from worsening.
Gaps (Diastemas): Closing spaces between teeth for a more uniform look.
Discolouration: Covering stubborn stains on a single tooth.

Does the tooth bonding procedure hurt?

In most cases, no. Because we are usually just adding material to the surface of the tooth rather than drilling into it, tooth bonding is typically painless and often performed without the need for local anaesthetic (injections).

How long does tooth bonding last?

While not as durable as porcelain veneers, composite bonding is a long-lasting solution. On average, it lasts between 5 and 7 years. Its lifespan depends heavily on your habits—if you bite your nails or chew on ice, the bonding material can chip just like natural enamel.

Will the tooth bonding stain?

Composite resin is slightly porous, meaning it can pick up stains over time from coffee, tea, red wine, or smoking. Unlike porcelain, which resists stains well, bonding may need to be polished or replaced eventually to keep it looking bright.

Can I whiten my bonded teeth?

No. The whitening gel will only affect your natural tooth enamel; it will not change the colour of the bonding resin. If you are planning to whiten your teeth, we recommend doing so before your bonding procedure so we can match the resin to your new, brighter shade.

Is the tooth bonding process reversible?

Yes. Because we remove very little (if any) natural tooth structure during the preparation, bonding is considered a reversible treatment. If you decide later to upgrade to porcelain veneers, the bonding material can be removed.
